Pastor Jay is starting the new series on the book of John called “What If…”.  He challenged us to think about these things:

“-What If we took the time to look closely at this Jesus and asked, – What if we committed ourselves to knowing Him deeper? – What if we pursued Him in His Word with passion? – What if we threw out all the preconceived ideas and notions about what we thought who Jesus was, and we came to His Word with new eyes? – What if we desired to live out all that He taught us and how He lived, just so others might see Jesus living in us? – What if we took our faith seriously, and made it be more about God, and less about us? – What if we stop pretending to be Christians, and really start living like the followers we are called to be?”

“What If…” Week One, The Word Became Flesh, John 1:1-18

Question 1.  Who wrote the Gospel of John?  The Apostle John, referred to in the gospel as “the one whom Jesus loved”.  Brother of James, son of Zebedee.  John was part of the inner circle of disciples most close to Jesus along with James and John.  Not John the Baptist, they are two different people.

Question 2.  To whom was this gospel written and for what reason?  It was written to NEW Christians and to those NON-Christians who were looking to learn more about this man Jesus.  John provides real evidence for them both that Jesus really was the Son of God and that all who believe in Him will be saved and have eternal life.

It all starts at the beginning!  In the beginning was the WORD.  And the Word was WITH God, and the Word WAS God.  He was with God in the beginning! verses 1 and 2

THE WORD…- In Him, (the Word), was LIFE. – And that LIFE was the LIGHT of all mankind.  verse 4

A matter of the flesh.  the Word, God, became FLESH (man).  He came and DWELT (lived) with man. verse 14.

Not by the Law, but by GRACE.  And now John says, that because Jesus came, there is a NEW Life made available for all who belive in His name.  Not a life under the old law, but a Life in the fullness of His GRACE as children of God.

Refernce Ephesians 2:4-7a “But because of His great love for us, God, who is in rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in trandgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.  And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in christ Jesus.  For it is by grace you have been saved.”

What is YOUR response?  Knowing about the Bible and about Jesus is not enough.  You must make a change and live for Him.  Don’t miss who Jesus is.  It isn’t enough to be going through the motions.  It doesn’t mean an easy life – there will be consequences for your sins and actions.  The difference is, when you are saved, you are forgiven by grace, you just need to pray and confess your sins.

The Memory Verse for the Week is John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
